Want a fun outside activity to do with your kids this summer? Chalk is always fun, but letting your kids paint outside is like Christmas! I found an easy recipe for sidewalk paint that uses only 3 ingredients that you’ll probably already have at home. It takes 5 minutes to put together (and you can let the kids help!), and it washes off with the rain so you won’t have to worry about cleaning it. Here’s what you need:
- 1 cup of cornstarch
- 1 cup of water
- Food coloring- multiple colors
First, stir together the cornstarch and water in a bowl until the cornstarch fully dissolves. Depending on how many colors you want, you can now separate the mixture into smaller containers. Pour 2-3 drops of food coloring at a time into each bowl, stirring until you reach your desired color. And that’s it!
I used two colors, pink and blue from my awesome neon food coloring. I then put them into regular food storage containers, gave Allison two paint brushes, and let her go to work! It’s really cool seeing how the bright colors show up on the driveway. To make the color stand out more, you might need at least two coats of paint, but one will do as well.
As you can see from the blue color, it starts out dark but then really lightens up as it dries. It looks awesome, and you can use your imagination: Make hopscotch, draw shapes with actions attached to them (Jump inside the square, spin around in the circle, etc.), whatever you can come up with. Allison likes to make me draw My Little Pony characters- not pictured, because I’m a horrible artist.
I now make sure I always have cornstarch in the house, because this sidewalk paint is so quick to put together to cure boredom. This is a must-do activity for your kids this summer! Try it and let me know what you think!
