Healthy Summer Smoothie Recipes

These Healthy Summer Smoothies are full of nutritious ingredients, perfect for hot mornings or nice afternoon treats!

Is there anything better on hot Summer days than enjoying a refreshing, cold smoothie?

When I get in the right mood, I can drink a smoothie every day. They’re full of nutrients and can keep you hydrated, which I know we all need in this hot weather!

What makes a healthy smoothie?

Everyone has a definition of “healthy”, and there is no one right answer for everyone.

However, this is what I typically look for in a smoothie:


The base is the liquid that goes into it. It can be any of the following, or others:

  • Milk
  • Plant-based milk (Almond milk, coconut milk, etc.)
  • Water
  • Fruit juice


Fruit is typically what sweetens the smoothie! And if you freeze the fruit, you may not need to use ice.

Here are some of my favorite fruits to use:

  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Banana
  • Pineapple chunks
  • Mango
  • Cherries


Vegetables aren’t necessary, but they do add extra nutrients. It’s helpful if you don’t typically eat enough veggies!

Here are ones that do well in smoothies:

  • Greens (Spinach, kale)
  • Carrots
  • Butternut squash

Healthy fats

Fat is what keeps you full. Without a fat source, your smoothie will give you a quick burst of energy and then crash afterward.

Here are some examples of healthy fats:

  • Chia seeds
  • Flax seed
  • Nut butters
  • Avocado


Protein also keeps you full, and is important if you’re eating this as a full meal. Your smoothie needs some staying power!

Here are good proteins that do well in smoothies:

  • Protein powder (Whey or plant-based)
  • Greek yogurt
  • Dairy milk
