What kind of oats work best?
In general, there are 3 types of oats you can use:
- Rolled oats (Also known as Old Fashioned Oats)
- Quick oats
- Steel-cut oats
I always use rolled oats in my overnight oats recipes because they’re a little firmer and still have a nice texture after soaking up the liquids.
Quick oats would also be okay, although they tend to get mushy.
I wouldn’t recommend steel cut oats in this, because they need more liquid and time to be soft enough to eat. You would probably need a completely different recipe.
Can I meal prep these for later?
Absolutely! I love to prep these ahead of time so I have an easy breakfast for the next few days. Just make sure they’re stored in airtight containers and they’ll stay fresh for about 5 days!
Ingredients
- Rolled oats
- Greek yogurt
- Milk
- Chia seeds
- Vanilla
- Honey
- Chocolate chips
- Walnuts
- Sliced banana
Additions/Substitutions
- Milk: I use dairy milk, but feel free to use a non-dairy milk: Oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk, etc.
- Yogurt: Use vanilla yogurt or a plant-based yogurt if dairy-free
- Maple syrup instead of honey
- Ground flax seed instead of chia seeds
- Use another type of nut besides walnuts
How to make
In a Mason jar, combine the oats, milk, yogurt, chia seeds, honey, vanilla, chocolate chips, and walnuts. Place a lid on top and store in the fridge overnight, or at least 3-4 hours.
When ready to eat, top with sliced banana and enjoy!
How to store
Overnight oats are best kept in the fridge, and will stay fresh for 4-6 days. I like to meal prep a few at a time so I have an easy breakfast ready to eat!
I like using Mason jars for these, but any airtight container will work.
