August Weight Loss Challenge, Week 1: No Soda!

Sharing is caring!

Who wants to take part in a little weight loss challenge this month? Week 1's goal: Stop drinking soda! www.nogettingoffthistrain.com

This month’s theme is something I’m really excited about! Recently I’ve been a little more active in living a healthier lifestyle and I think it’d be fun to issue a challenge to all of you! A healthy weight loss goal is 1 pound a week, so that’s what we’ll do! Every Friday this month I’ll check in with my weight loss and give a couple tips for small food changes that will aid in your journey to better health!

Starting today, my life is made public! I’m using MyFitnessPal to track my food, and I’m going to make my profile public so you can see what I eat and what exercise I’ve been doing. If you use MyFitnessPal too and want to share yours, you can post your profile in the comments so we can encourage each other! I’m also making public my FitBit profile so you can see how many steps I take and maybe join some of my challenges!

So, one of the best ways to lose weight is to change what and how you eat. This week’s challenge is to stop drinking soda! Did you know there are 140 calories in a can of Coke? And how many of those do you drink in a day? When the daily recommended calorie intake is only 2,000 calories, that really adds up! And the sugar content is crazy! There are 39 grams of sugar in one can of Coke; and according to MyFitnessPal, I should only be consuming 30 grams a DAY. I don’t even want to think about the calorie and sugar content of a large Coke at any fast food restaurant, and how often do we go ahead and get it because it’s only a dollar this summer?

I’m going to challenge you to drink ONLY water for one week and see what happens! …Okay, your morning coffee is fine, too. There’s no way I can give that up! But seriously, I’ve heard of people dropping weight like crazy just because they gave up soda: both regular AND diet alike. And how cool would it be to get on the scale next week to find you’ve already lost 2-3 pounds just from drinking water?

A recommended water intake is about half your body weight in ounces, so if you weigh 160 pounds, you should be drinking about 80 ounces a day. Ugh, that sounds like a lot, right? Here are a few tips to get you started!

One way to track is by knowing the container you’re drinking out of. This big purple cup holds about 80 ounces, so I know that if I can drink the entire cup in one day, I’ll hit my goal!

On the other hand, this cup is more portable. It holds about 20 ounces, so I know if I fill it up 4 times I’ll get my full 80 ounces! This one goes everywhere with me, so I’m always drinking it!

There are also some really good apps to help you keep track of how much you drink. One I saw is called PlantNanny, where you have to take care of a plant by drinking lots of water. It’s really cute, and might be a great way to encourage you to drink more water!

So, start with this small change! Replace all your soda drinking with water this week and see what happens. I’ll weigh in next Friday to see how I did! Who will join me?

Well I hope I can do it. I drink about 3 bottles of Dr Pepper a day so this is hard. The first day I went to one so I wouldn't frealt,I literally was in full blown withdrawal. I was hurting all night and having the cold sweats red skin, just awful. So that morning I knew what it was so I drank about a 4th and I felt better, so I'm slowly having to quit. I still feel that I can possibly lose the weight since I'm dropping 2 and half bottles a day. :/ Really need support. My fiance keeps telling me to drink some ,but only because he hates seeing me this way. Also sorry this is long but I've started the water which is ughhh, and my bladder is killing me, my fiance said my bladder is yelling at me... ha. But I feel better writing this. Reading your stuff made me really think.....

Heather, you are doing awesome! Quitting cold turkey might not be the best way to go if you hate the headaches. If you're drinking 3 a day, try going down to 2 for a week, then 1, then none. That might help with the withdrawal. I did something similar with the cream in my coffee! I had to slowly cut back because I loved the sweet taste, but eventually my taste buds got used to it. Cutting back on things is SO hard, but you are strong. You can do this!

Haha, I don't drink it much now either. =P I like to indulge every so often, though.

Hmm, definitely worth a try, though I haven't indulged in REAL (sugar) soda in many years. As a mature woman, I am concerned about cola leaching the calcium from my bones. I'm going to give it a try. Here I am living in TX (and it's HOT right now) & I find lately I just haven't been drinking nearly enough water. Can I do it for week? I think so... and thanks for letting me keep my coffee!!! ;)
