Welcome to week 3 of my organized home series! In case you missed last week, here’s the link to week 2 in which I organized and de-cluttered our bedroom and Allison’s room. This week we’re focusing on the office and living room, and let me tell you, I was not looking forward to this. After John and I got married, we threw all our stuff into the empty room that is now Allison’s room, and then shifted most of it into the office after she was born. We never did anything to it, so stuff just accumulated and the office just became a huge mess. I finally decided enough was enough and that’s partially why I started this series, to help my own house get more organized and more livable. So, let’s get started!
I’m so embarrassed by the state of my office. But, I had to start somewhere! The first thing we did was clear off that cube shelf and put it into Allison’s room, replacing her changing table and putting that in the office instead. Allison still uses her crib and the changing table was part of that set, so we need to find a place to put it until she outgrows her crib.
I love storage containers and being able to put everything in them, so that’s what I’m doing in here to save space (after picking out the stuff to donate/sell/throw out). I used to cross-stitch a lot, so I’m re-using an Easter basket to hold all of that stuff. I also have organization drawers from when I had my massage business, so I’m using it now for stationary and other things blog related.
I also have a lot of CDs. Tons that I never listen to but didn’t want to get rid of, especially my beloved video game/anime soundtracks. So I went through all of them, chose a few to keep, and I’m ripping the rest to my computer and will sell them. I’m getting rid of the rotating CD holder and will put the rest on the rack that John has, provided there are some CDs he wants to get rid of too. =)
My bookshelf had a ton of books and other things that I didn’t need anymore. I picked through the books I didn’t want, took all the loose photos from the top shelf and put them in a photo album, and moved John’s books from the cube shelf to the bookshelf, as well as all the cookbooks I had laying in a box.
Okay, to be quite honest, I couldn’t get the entire office done. There was just way too much stuff. However, all those boxes you see are filled with items to donate and sell for a garage sale in the next couple months, so I’m hoping that by April, all these boxes will be cleared! I will also keep a large box/crate in the office from now on to put any unwanted items, and when the box gets full, we’ll donate it. I think that’ll really help decrease the clutter, and having a place to put it means it won’t get stuck somewhere else and forgotten, creating the same problem we have now. Sorry I couldn’t finish it, but at least you can see we’re making progress! I’ll be sure to make an update when I get everything finished.
Our living room didn’t have a ton to work on, so my main goal was to keep it from looking like a toy store. That’s where these awesome cube boxes come in.
Putting the cube shelf in Allison’s room is really helping with the clutter. She has a toybox, but she has a huge mixture of big and small toys and I wanted to keep everything together. All of her large toys and playsets now go in her toybox, and the cube boxes are for her Little People, Duplos, and toy food.
One of my goals is to get her to help me clean up the living room every night before bed. I tend to stress if there’s a mess of toys everywhere, so I’m hoping that waking up to a nice, clean living room will help set my mood for the rest of the day!
That looks so much better!
Good luck this week, everyone! Don’t forget to comment on any of my posts and tell me how you’re doing with your organization! I like to know that I’m not alone in this!
