My Video Game Obsession

Sharing is caring!

video games

I’m keeping it light today with a fairly well-known fact about me: I love video games. It’s been my life forever, and I don’t see it coming to an end anytime soon, despite the fact I have less free time now. Nevertheless, it’s something I try to make time for every so often, and I wanted to share my obsession with you today!

It all started around the age of 3-4, when I began by watching my dad play through the original Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo. It was pretty much the most amazing thing ever, and I loved just sitting there watching. “Fun” fact: One day, my dad made it to the final levels of Super Mario Bros. 3, and paused to walk out of the room for something. Me, being 4, thought he was just finished, and turned off the game so I could watch TV. He walked back in, and I still remember his words: “I have to start All. Over. Again.” Oops. I still joke about that every so often with my sister, and there was no harm done (besides like 3 hours wasted). Sorry, dad. =)

Over the years my obsession grew, and I became introduced to role playing games, or RPGs. Those are the ones with tons of words, turn-based battle systems, and take upwards of 50+ hours to complete. Yep, at a young age I was happily playing Final Fantasy 2 and 3 for the SNES, and I give video games pretty much all the credit for teaching me big words and starting my love of reading.

So, my collection has dwindled a little, mostly because I just finished purging a bunch for our upcoming garage sale, but I still own quite a bit. Between my Playstation, PS2, PS3, Playstation Portable, XBOX360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS/3DS, and Nintendo GameBoy Advance, I currently have 117 video games. Do I still play all of them? Nope, but I can’t bring myself to get rid of them, because I will play them eventually. I get these urges to play a specific game and will do so for about 2 weeks straight, and then get bored and not play anything for a few months. I have a pretty short attention span.

So for those that are actually familiar with video games, here are my all-time favorites:

  • Final Fantasy 4/6/7/9/Tactics
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Xenogears
  • Suikoden 1/2/3
  • Harvest Moon (Back To Nature for the Playstation and the Boy/Girl versions for the Game Boy Advance are my favorites)
  • Katamari Damacy
  • Super Mario RPG
  • Earthbound
  • Secret of Mana
  • Fable
  • Breath of Fire 1/2
  • Persona 3

Thank you for indulging me today, especially those who have no interest in this sort of thing! Like I said, it’s just something that’s really important in my life. I hope to get Allison more involved as she gets older and share my joy; how cool would it be to be video game nerds together? Are there any other obsessed fans out there that share my favorite games? I need more people to talk to!

Okay, I love this post haha! For me it was playing the first final fantasy on nintendo with my dad and then phantasy star 4 on the sega. I love RPGs too and I agree that its always the story that hooks me (I'm a big ol book nerd too). Some of my faves now are Mass Effect and Dragon Age (so many options!!! Thus making them replayable, and frugal ;) ) Of course my fave of all time will always be FF7!! Getting kinda nerded out for the remake. There are a few games my husband and I play together too, since hes a big gamer.

I think you're my new best friend, haha! =) I'm super excited for the FF7 remake, although I just read today that the game's going to be split up into separate games, called "episodes", but that each episode is going to be like the size of FF13, which is huge. I'm interested to see how this will go!
