Summer’s nearing its end, and my toddler aches to go outside and play. Whether it’s at the park, in the backyard playing in her splashpad, or even just walking around the neighborhood, it’s like she craves the outdoors. I do my best to appease her, but there are times when it’s just so hot I can’t even bear the thought of going outside. I went to the dollar store to find toys, both outdoor and indoor, to help keep Allison busy and make the days a little more fun. I spent $5.00 and got some pretty cool stuff! Check it out.
Stickers are fun any time of year. They’re fun to peel off, fun to stick (even on not-so-good surfaces), and can seriously keep Allison busy for quite awhile. Strange fact, she actually likes putting stickers in her coloring books, covering people’s eyes. It’s kind of creepy to look at.
Who can go all summer without playing with bubbles? She saw the princess ones and had to have them. We got home and took them outside, and within 5 minutes she accidentally kicked it over, then held it upside down to dump the rest of it. Welp. Good thing it was only a dollar.
Speaking of bubbles, this bubble wand is awesome. It’s great quality for the dollar store, and it really makes lots of big bubbles. This is probably a Mommy-only toy, because I can just see her accidentally overturning it while taking the wand out. But since she likes to chase the bubbles anyway, this may not be a problem!
Flash cards are a nice indoor toy, one that Allison picked out herself because of course, it had princesses on it. These ones have jewels on one side, and on the other side it either has the actual number, or the number spelled out. It’s a great educational tool, as it teaches number and letter recognition, and even matching because each card has a princess on top she can pair together.
Ice Pop Maker
I think this one is my favorite. I’ve always wanted an ice pop maker but have always forgotten about it once I get in the store. I figured, for a dollar, why not? You can put absolutely anything in them: Pudding, yogurt, fruit, a combination of each… it’s an awesome summer treat, and Allison loved them! I don’t know if it’s because of the quality, or because I didn’t let them freeze long enough, but when I tried to pull one out, the handle popped out. You may need to use a knife to gently pry the pop off the sides first before letting it slide out. Here’s the recipe I used for this one:
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- 1 frozen banana
- About 2 cups strawberries
Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth, then pour into the ice pop maker and freeze until ready! So easy, and it’s full of good ingredients. Next time I might make a yogurt and blueberry pop!
It’s amazing what kind of entertainment five dollars will get you at the dollar store. So far, Allison’s enjoyed every one of these and actually keeps asking me to go back to buy “more summer toys”. Maybe I’ll end up having to do a Winter edition! What are your favorite things to get at the dollar store?
