I (Almost) Said R.I.P Naptime

Sharing is caring!

I almost said R.I.P naptime: www.nogettingoffthistrain.com

Friends, I almost had a horrible situation last week. I was ready to say goodbye to a dear old friend and was mourning its loss: Precious naptime.

I’m not quite sure why it happened, but Allison hadn’t napped in almost a week and a half. Her usual routine is waking up around 7:30, and then nap from about 1:30 to 3:00. But for some reason it just wasn’t happening. I sit with her in the rocking chair to get her nice and sleepy (I’m milking this for all it’s worth, by the way), and then set her in bed, where she’ll immediately scoot to her sleeping place at the foot of the bed. Usually she’ll just fall right asleep and there are no problems. But during that week, she just wouldn’t fall asleep! She’d start rolling around in her bed, holding up her stuffed animal, banging her feet on the bed, and just generally not sleeping. It was wearing me down, and she was constantly grumpy in the evenings due to not napping.

I feel like part of it is because we’ve just been so busy recently! We’ve had playdates and parties and Kings Island that all take place during her normal naptime; I’m usually pretty strict about scheduling her naps, which can make outings difficult. Lunch is always at noon, and she always goes down about 1:30, with bedtime at 7:00. I feel like if I mess up the timing on one thing, it’s going to put a damper on our entire day; but on the other hand, I don’t want to say no to every event because it messes up my schedule. I think that’s where Allison just decided to stop napping for a short time.

Once I accepted my no-nap fate, I tried for one day to encourage “quiet time” instead, which she didn’t understand, so she kept whining and calling for me for about 25 minutes. “Mommy, come in! Mommy, come back! I’m awake! Mommy, it’s time to get up!” Welp. I know I should have kept up with it, but the next day I decided to try for a nap again with zero expectations… and was shocked when she slept for 2 hours! She’s napped every day since then, so I have no idea what happened. All I know is that I’m a happy Mommy again that has her writing time back!

However, I do know that naptime may soon be coming to an end and am trying to prepare myself for it. I know some kids that stopped right around Allie’s age; then again, I know some 4 year-olds that still nap, and even some that NEVER napped. I know it won’t last forever, so I’ll take it as it comes and just force myself to make a new schedule when it does happen! At what age did your kids stop napping, and how well did you adjust to making a new schedule for yourself?

Oh we hit this stage right before my daughter 3rd birthday. About every 4 days she would take a nap. But just then this week she is ready for a nap at 230 and falls asleep on the couch. I do daycare so the only bad thing is the other kids are getting up around 3 to 330. Need to find a good schedule for all!

Oh my! I can imagine it's hard to get one down for a nap when other kids are running around as well. =(
