How a Simple Cleaning Schedule Saved My Sanity

Sharing is caring!

Cleaning Schedule

I have to admit, I’m a very lazy person. I WANT to clean, I really do. But those video games are SO tempting. And then I feel guilty because the house is a mess, the kitchen floor is filthy, and I just want to walk around without stepping on toys! Finally, I put my foot down and decided I needed to do something. I made a VERY simple list of small things for me to do each day; that way I don’t get too burnt out and I keep my short attention span in check. Each task only takes about 10 minutes, perfect to do during naptime! Here’s the breakdown of my week:

Monday: Laundry, Swiffer living room floor, mop kitchen and living room floors
Tuesday: Pick up living room (Mostly consists of me picking up all the toys that Allison’s going to immediately get back out), dust house
Wednesday: Clean bathrooms. Usually consists of cleaning the toilet and sink, and quickly scrubbing out the bathtub.
Thursday: Laundry, pick up bedrooms
Friday: Clean kitchen. Usually do something quick, like wiping down the cabinets/outside of the fridge and clearing off the table.
Saturday and Sunday:
Free days, usually. The weekends are pretty busy so housework duties are light.

Every day I also sweep the kitchen floor. It sounds so small, but I only did it like once a week and I kept getting frustrated about having a dirty floor! By doing it every day, I’m kept happy staring at a clean kitchen!

I still don’t have a good routine for deep cleaning. Who has time for that? If I figure out an efficient way to quickly do some of those things, I’ll let you know! But for now, I’m fine with the baseboards being a little dusty. =)

Now, how do I keep myself accountable? I’ve tried putting these tasks onto Google Calendar, but realized I never checked it and it was easy to fall into old lazy habits. Last month I came across a site called “HabitRPG” and I’m addicted!

Wiki-wordmark

It’s a daily task and habit site/app with an RPG element, which is great for my nerd self. You gain experience points for every Daily, Habit, and To-Do, and you level up and change classes, like Warrior, Mage, Healer, and Thief. I can’t believe how accountable I’m keeping myself with this! There’s also an app you can download so you can add tasks and check them off while you’re on the go. I know it’s not for everyone, but it’s certainly helped me!

Do you have a cleaning schedule? If so, how do you keep yourself accountable? Share your ideas below!

Ashli and I used to use a website called Chorewars which turned it into a game and made it really competitive until we got into a routine. We still use it on occasion if we're behind or have been sick and let things slide for whatever reason.

Haha, awesome! I'll have to check it out and see if it's something John wants to do.

That site is amazing. =) It fills my nerdy needs of choosing a class and leveling up.

I need to adopt a schedule like this. I am guilty of cleaning my apartment on the weekend instead of spacing it out. It gets to be a lot when I am also blogging on the weekend and try to have a social life!

I hear you there! It's hard for me not to fit everything into one or two days.

I have a small apartment, so it's not to difficult too clean, but when I do I usually designate most of the time consuming tasks for the weekend and do simple task like laundry and dishes during the week.

That's a great idea!
