Today’s tip for you is to look for a bread outlet store in your area! It’s a store that carries expired or almost-expired bread from other grocery stores and restaurants. Honestly, I haven’t thought about these stores in quite awhile. The last time I went to one was years ago, and all I bought was snack cakes and other sweet goodness. And I usually make my own bread, so I just stopped thinking about going. But Wednesday, for some strange reason, I had an urge to visit, so I packed up Allie and off we went!
This building actually used to be a Hostess outlet, as you can see from the random word “Cake” on the left side. Now it’s Schwebels, and there’s even an Entenmanns outlet not too far from my house.
A lot of the displays around the edge of the store were empty. Their supply just varies depending on what other stores bring them, so it’s like Christmas when you find something amazing! There were quite a few regular bread loaves, as well as hamburger/hot dog buns. They averaged around $.99 a bag, which is what I usually pay at Meijer and Aldi so it wasn’t a great deal for me. However, they ARE name brand, so if you like a particular brand, these are probably a lot cheaper than regular price!
In the middle of my store was all the snack cakes. Moon Pies, doughnuts, cookies, brownies… I bought Allison a treat as a bribe for getting her to come with me, but I probably could have gotten a lot more. It all looked amazing.
And what is this???? Jackpot! My mouth dropped when I saw this because I didn’t realize restaurants would send them bread as well! These were bags of 30 hamburger buns, and 24 longer sub rolls, like for Burger King’s fish/chicken sandwiches. I snagged a bag of each because, at $1.50 a bag, I couldn’t pass it up.
I flash froze the buns on a cookie sheet and then stuck them in freezer bags. Now instead of taking the time to make a huge batch of buns, I can just take out what we need in the mornings! I’ll still make my own bread at times, but for that price, I’m okay with taking it easy for awhile.
My other goodies! Those peanut butter swiss rolls were heavenly. And the Cinnabon bread was only $1.29! I had to try it, and it was totally worth the price.
If you’ve never visited a bread outlet, do a search for one in your area! It may be hit or miss depending on the day, but I’ll bet you can find some great deals. Which ones are around you?
