Guidelines For 4 Weeks to Fill Your Freezer Challenge

Choose any number of recipes to make for the week

In my original challenge, I made 5 recipes per week. I made one every day, but you could certainly make all 5 at once, or maybe a couple per day.

Keep inventory

Whatever you decide to make, just make sure you write down everything that’s in your freezer! I hate digging around and finding meals I made MONTHS ago that I completely forgot about.

Enjoy your free time!

With all these meals now in your freezer, you don’t have to worry about spending lots of time in the kitchen cooking dinner or putting together a breakfast.

Why breakfast freezer meals?

Let’s face it: We’re going to have some busy mornings. Rushing to work, getting the kids ready for school… things can get chaotic!

But if you had breakfast already prepared and could eat a hot breakfast every day, how much time and energy would you save every morning? You could actually get in a nutritious breakfast and have the energy for the day.

And honestly, I believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It helps me focus better and keeps me from overeating the rest of the day. A healthy breakfast can really change your mindset!

How do you freeze breakfast meals?

There are a few different methods, depending on what you’re making. Here are the main ways I freeze my make ahead breakfasts:

  • Flash freeze: I do this with muffins, pancakes, waffles, and baked oatmeal/ oatmeal cups. I place them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let them freeze overnight. Then I put them in a labeled gallon-size freezer bag.
  • Wrapping: For items like breakfast sandwiches and freezer breakfast burritos, I wrap them in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and put all of them in a gallon-sized freezer bag.
  • Containers: For breakfast bowls, I put them in individual freezer-safe containers like these. I’ll either tape a label on or write on the lid with marker the date I put them in the freezer.

How do you reheat freezer breakfasts?

Most items I put in the fridge and let them thaw overnight. That helps to heat it evenly the next day. Or if I forget, I’ll put it on a plate (Taking off any wrappings) and defrost for a minute in the microwave; then heat it up regularly.

Breakfast sandwiches are amazing when you heat them in a toaster oven!

Each breakfast is different, so make sure you read the recipe because it typically has reheating instructions!

How long will these freezer meals last?

Typically, most freezer meals will stay fresh up to 3 months in the freezer. They’re still safe to eat after that; but the longer they stay in the freezer, the better chance they have of getting freezer burn. And that can affect the quality and taste.

What are the best breakfast foods to freeze?

Some foods freeze better than others! Here are some of my favorites that freeze well:

  • Make ahead breakfast sandwiches (I’ve used bagels and English muffins and both work well)
  • Freezer burritos
  • Baked oatmeal
  • Muffins
  • Egg bake (Or egg casserole/frittata)

Whole Wheat Waffles (Doubled, is reflected in the grocery list)

Waffles can take forever to cook, which makes this one of my favorite make ahead breakfast recipes.

Banana Bread Baked Oatmeal (4 Weeks to Fill Your Freezer Day 2)

Banana Bread Baked Oatmeal (Doubled, is reflected in the grocery list)

Baked oatmeal is seriously my favorite! This delicious breakfast is one the whole family will enjoy.

Breakfast Burrito Packs (4 Weeks to Fill Your Freezer Day 3)

Breakfast Burrito Packs

Sometimes a frozen breakfast burrito shell will get hard and dry when you microwave it. This time around I just made the filling to freeze! And I kept some flour tortillas around when I was ready to eat them.

Morning Glory Muffins (4 Weeks to Fill Your Freezer Day 4)

Morning Glory Muffins

If you have a busy day ahead, sometimes it’s good to have a grab-and-go breakfast. Muffins can definitely be convenient breakfasts but aren’t always nutritious. These muffins have added vegetables and whole wheat flour for extra staying power!

Healthy Breakfast Sausage Balls (4 Weeks to Fill Your Freezer Day 5)

Healthy Sausage Balls

I used whole wheat flour for extra fiber in this recipe! You can use regular pork breakfast sausage or turkey sausage if you want fewer calories.

How long can these meals last in the freezer? Getting ready for baby #1 and I want to make a bunch of freezer meals to get us through the first few weeks :)

Hi Kelley, congratulations!!!

In general, most freezer meals will stay fresh up to 3 months. Not that they go "bad" after that, but you just risk freezer burn. =) But that should be plenty of time to enjoy your new baby/enjoy freezer meals without having to cook!
